Fujiya & Miyagi / Project Jenny, Project Jan

10-16-07: Club de Ville is one of my favorite bars in Austin (though as a venue it is inferior to its neighbor); however, the intimate setting it provides was excellent for the Fujiya & Miyagi show.  Unfortunately, the trio(?) performed a dance/drone set that seemed to get the hipsters feet tapping without causing the dance party one would expect from this sound, with one (large) notable exception (shown right).

Excellent beats were on offer all night, but the shocker of the evening was the opener Project Jenny, Project Jan.  The duo’s combination of rapping and (pretty sick) beats would normally frighten the hipsters, who typically cringe at this type of genre (with the glaring exception of Buck 65).  However, they eventually won over the crowd and showed versatility with their lounge-hop “Brooklyn” to close.  It’s too bad that more of their songs didn’t take more advantage of this voice, which was refreshing compared to the droning from Fujiya & Miyagi.
