There was a DFA-centric concert this evening. I am clearly not there, as i am typing this now instead of getting wasted on $3 tallboys downtown. Call me a pretentious a-hole but something about the Scion: House Party at Beauty Bar featuring various DFA artists (the mid-tier ones mind you, i would eat these words if either Tim or James were within a thousand miles of austin right now) doesn’t appeal to me. It’s true, Scion does make some of the best minivans for young post-urban soccer-mom who still know that unnecessarily boxy is the new hybrid. Also, the fact that it’s at beauty bar is pretty awesome; i love pretending i am from brooklyn, hopping off the L-train, but still feeling lucky that drinks on 7th don’t actually cost $8 like they do in manhattan. I also love pretending i live in the Mission, oh, and in LA, Vegas, and San Diego??? So that’s a plus about the concert tonight.
Maybe what is turning me off to the concert is that there are actually talented DJ’s playing. It’s really a shame when you have a sweet corperate cross-promotion, only to be ruined by talent that isn’t popular enough to bring in all the scion hungry yupsters on 5th. I mean, you have to hand it to DFA, for the smart move of trying to grab some of the scion fan demographic. It’s true that regular touring without the advertising for car companies might be profitable, but with such a popular label behind you, why not try to break into the young, urban automobile markets.
Classy, subtle advertising is such a bore anyway these days. At bars, i usually prefer something that will stick out, like these car adverts… Ugh, i can’t even keep up this lame sarcasm any longer. I don’t even mind that the record company is trying to make money, esp. when their prime customer often steals their product and they have to pretend like they don’t care. Still, when it looks so much like a cross-company circle jerk, i notice, and it detracts from me wanting to go. I know they got’s to pay the bills, but let’s try and keep it classy san diego. Maybe a product that i care about? Maybe something that is subtle, or retro, or unique (think swobo, not trek). Please, not something that has been marketed to me over and over, for the last 5 years. Put some thought into it, don’t be cookie cutter, find out where the real spot is in my town. Easy = Stupid; it’s fine if i am dying to see the artist, but not when i am on the fence.
